Historical origins

Hellenistic astrology

  • Developed ~2nd century BCE to 7th century CE

  • Originated in the Mediterranean world (Egypt, Greece, Rome)

  • Key surviving text: Tetrabiblos by Claudius Ptolemy

  • Was revived in the 1990s through translation of ancient manuscripts

Hellenistic astrology is the root system of Western astrology.

What is your astrology? How does it influence your life?

Modern astrology

  • Developed mainly 19th–20th century

  • Influenced by psychology, especially Jungian thought

  • Key modern figure: Carl Jung (indirect influence)

  • Popularized in the 20th century by astrologers like Dane Rudhyar

Modern astrology is largely psychological and growth-oriented.

Core philosophy

Hellenistic

  • Objective, fate-based framework

  • Focuses on external events and life topics

  • Uses structured timing systems

  • Assumes some events are part of destiny

  • Clear benefic (Jupiter, Venus) and malefic (Mars, Saturn) distinctions

It asks:

What is likely to happen? When? In which area of life?

Modern

  • Psychological and developmental

  • Focuses on inner experience and personal growth

  • Less deterministic

  • Rarely uses “malefic” language

  • Emphasizes empowerment and free will

It asks:

What does this mean for my personal growth?

House systems

Hellenistic

  • Primarily uses whole sign houses

  • The entire zodiac sign becomes a house

  • Very clean structural approach

 Modern

  • Often uses Placidus or other quadrant systems

  • House cusps matter more

  • More spatial/astronomical emphasis

Techniques

Hellenistic techniques

  • Annual Profections

  • Zodiacal Releasing

  • Time Lords

  • Lots (e.g., Lot of Fortune, Lot of Spirit)

  • Sect (day vs night chart)

  • Essential dignity

Highly structured and predictive.
Modern techniques
  • Transits

  • Progressions

  • Solar returns

  • Psychological interpretation

  • Aspect patterns

  • Chiron, outer planets heavily emphasized

Less timing-focused, more interpretive.

Use of outer planets

Hellenistic

  • Does NOT traditionally use Uranus, Neptune, Pluto

  • Uses only visible planets:

    • Sun

    • Moon

    • Mercury

    • Venus

    • Mars

    • Jupiter

    • Saturn

Modern
  • Strong emphasis on:

    • Uranus

    • Neptune

    • Pluto

    • These represent transformation, awakening, spirituality

View of fate (hellenistic astrology) vs free will (modern astrology)
Hellenistic
  • Life unfolds in chapters

  • Some things are fixed

  • Timing systems are central

  • “Quality of the period” matters more than mindset

Modern
  • Strong focus on agency

  • Astrology as tool for self-awareness

  • Events are less emphasized than interpretation
